Homer's Odyssey Inspires Modern Art

Homer's epic poem, The Odyssey, continues to resonate with creators today, inspiring a diverse range of modern works.

James Joyce's 1922 novel, Ulysses, is broadly structured around Homer's epic, mirroring its divisions and episodes with characters that parallel Odysseus, Penelope, and Telemachus. Stanley Kubrick's 1968 science fiction masterpiece, 2001: A Space Odyssey, draws thematic connections to the poem, with Kubrick himself acknowledging Homer's influence as a jumping-off point.

Further adaptations include Charles Frazier's historical fiction novel "Cold Mountain," which follows a soldier's arduous journey home, echoing Odysseus's trials. The Coen brothers transformed the epic into a Southern-fried crime comedy musical with "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" George Clooney stars as Ulysses Everett McGill, with the film humorously adapting characters and scenarios from the poem.

Other notable interpretations include "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie" (2004), Margaret Atwood's novella "The Penelopiad" (2005) which retells the story from Penelope's perspective, and Madeline Miller's 2018 novel "Circe" focusing on the sorceress.

More recent works continue this tradition. Robert Eggers' 2019 film "The Lighthouse" incorporates elements like the sea god Proteus, while Ari Aster's 2023 film "Beau Is Afraid" reimagines the hero's journey with surreal and comic elements. Jorge Rivera-Herrans' ambitious musical adaptation, "EPIC: The Musical," released between 2022 and 2024, retells the classic story through a series of albums. A live-action musical adaptation is also anticipated for April 2026, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.
