Padma Shri awardee Utsav Charan Das, a celebrated figure in Odisha's traditional Ghoda Nacha (horse dance), passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 80. He was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Choudwar after complaining of severe chest pain. Das, who had dedicated over six decades to preserving and popularizing the vibrant dance form, received the Padma Shri in 2020.
Born in Tangimania village and raised in Choudwar, Das embraced Ghoda Nacha at a young age. He emerged as a crucial torchbearer for the art form, training numerous artistes and showcasing it on national platforms. His contributions were widely acknowledged, including an honor by the Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi and recognition from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep sorrow, emphasizing Das's invaluable contribution to enriching Odisha's folk heritage.
