23 Feb
Summary
- Odisha government launches digital repository for 4000 heritage sites.
- Project includes mapping tangible and intangible cultural expressions.
- Geo-referencing and GIS mapping will protect sites from encroachment.

Odisha has embarked on a significant cultural heritage initiative, planning to digitally document 4,000 heritage monuments and sites. This project, led by the state archaeology wing, will create a digital repository integrating architectural, historical, cultural, and geographical data. The initiative focuses on a holistic preservation approach, including the documentation of intangible cultural heritage such as oral histories, rituals, and festivals.
Key to this project is the geo-referencing of every heritage site using GIS-based spatial mapping tools. This will establish a precise location database and aid in monitoring land use and potential encroachment. Site boundaries, access routes, and environmental settings will be meticulously mapped.
Phase one will also prioritize the development of conservation proposals for 75 monuments. This involves assessing their current condition and devising strategies for structural stabilization and restoration. The comprehensive documentation aims to provide a 360-degree view of these assets, preserving both tangible and intangible cultural knowledge for posterity. Agencies in heritage conservation are being sought to develop the digital database.
