NYPD's Hip-Hop Cop Dies at 65

Detective Derrick Parker, widely recognized as the "Hip-Hop Cop," died on July 24 at the age of 65 from a heart attack. Born and raised in Brooklyn and Queens, Parker joined the NYPD in 1982, his career mirroring the rise of hip-hop. He became the department's primary expert on crimes involving entertainers, including Sean Combs, Jennifer Lopez, and Lil' Kim. His role involved acting as a one-man intelligence unit and liaison to the music industry. Parker's insights were critical in investigations of high-profile cases, such as the murders of Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G., both of which had ties to New York. Before a rapper's performance, he would brief officers on potential threats and criminal backgrounds. In 1999, he was instrumental in managing the aftermath of a shooting at Club New York involving Sean Combs and Jennifer Lopez. He also played a key role in de-escalating a conflict between the entourages of Lil' Kim and Capone in 2001. Parker retired from the force in 2002, later co-founding a security company. He co-authored a memoir, "Notorious C.O.P.," detailing his experiences. He is survived by his siblings.
