Queens-native Joe Macken has unveiled his life's work: an expansive, hyperrealistic model of New York City. This monumental diorama, measuring 50 by 27 feet, is meticulously crafted from wood, cardboard, and glue.
Macken's project began with a smaller bridge model in 2003, which was destroyed during a move. This setback inspired him to create something grander, starting with a replica of 30 Rock and expanding to encompass all five boroughs.
The immense undertaking required incredible consistency, with Macken dedicating a decade to constructing Manhattan alone, and another ten years to complete the remaining boroughs. His model thoughtfully includes both the original World Trade Center towers and the new One World Trade Center.
Now housed at the Museum of the City of New York, the model is displayed in a way that highlights the outer boroughs, challenging the typical focus on Manhattan. Visitors can use binoculars to explore specific details, discovering familiar landmarks and even their own neighborhoods within the miniature metropolis.
The project gained viral attention on TikTok last summer, introducing Macken's dedication and creativity to a massive online audience. Museum curators praised the model's remarkable accuracy and Macken's ability to recreate complex architecture from simple materials.
