2 Oct
Summary
- Choreographers collaborated with fashion designers at NYC Ballet's annual gala.
- Costumes sometimes overwhelmed the dance, leading to a less than stellar performance.
- Three new ballets premiered, each featuring unique designer- Pired choreographic concepts.

New York City Ballet recently held its yearly fashion gala, a tradition where designers collaborate with choreographers. This season, the elaborate costumes frequently overshadowed the dance performances, prompting criticism. The event featured three new ballets created through partnerships: Alysa Pires with Victor&Rolf, Justin Peck with Simone Rocha, and Jennifer Archibald with Robert Wun.
"Auspicy," choreographed by Alysa Pires, featured a concept about motherhood with a prominent, gilded coat, but was described as an expensive school pageant. "Shared Rain," by Jennifer Archibald, explored climate change using glittering umbrellas and jewel-embedded costumes, offering some energy despite critiques of its execution. The pas de deux "Mirror/Sky" by Justin Peck, set to a version of Stevie Nicks's "Landslide," was deemed a tepid response to the song, with costumes by Simone Rocha also drawing negative remarks.
The performances ran through October 18th at the David H. Koch Theater.
