The film Dhurandhar The Revenge has brought the timeless music of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan back into the spotlight for Hindi film audiences. The movie features revived versions of two compositions, 'Jaan Se Guzarte Hain' and 'Man Atkeya Beparwah De Naal', rekindling appreciation for his spiritual and emotional sound.
This renewed interest highlights Bollywood's significant past engagement with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's work. The film Koyla, starring Shah Rukh Khan, marked 29 years on April 18, 2026. Its memorable song 'Saanson Ki Mala' was a dramatic adaptation of his composition.
Interestingly, Koyla was not the first major Hindi film to utilize 'Saanson Ki Mala'. Nine months earlier, the song had featured in the Sunny Deol-starrer Jeet (1996). This means the composition gained prominence in a mainstream Bollywood vehicle led by Sunny Deol before its iconic status in Koyla.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's popularity in India grew significantly, particularly after his song 'Afreen Afreen' in 1996. He also contributed songs to films like Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya (1997) and Kachchhe Dhaage (1999), in addition to singing 'Dulhe Ka Sehra' from Dhadkan (2000).
Initially, as was common then, recreations of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's songs in films like Jeet and Koyla did not credit him. However, a later recreation of 'Saanson Ki Mala' in Yaariyan 2 (2023) did provide due credit to the legendary musician.
