Sister Catherine Rose Holzman, an 89-year-old nun involved in a property dispute with singer Katy Perry, died during a court hearing on Friday. The legal battle concerned a convent that Perry agreed to purchase for $14.5 million in 2015. The nuns, Sister Catherine Rose and Sister Rita Callanan, objected to the sale, citing discomfort with handing over the property.
Despite Perry's attempts to win them over, including visiting and singing for them, the nuns pursued an alternative sale to a local restaurant owner without the approval of their Archdiocese. This led to Perry and the Catholic Church being awarded nearly $10 million in damages in 2017, as the sisters lacked the necessary consent from church authorities for a sale exceeding $7.5 million.
The proceedings related to the judgment have been suspended due to Sister Catherine Rose's passing. Archbishop Jose Gomez expressed gratitude for her years of service. In what may have been her final interview, Sister Catherine Rose had directly pleaded with Katy Perry to cease her actions, stating they were causing harm.
