A new youth-led awards program, the NUMAs (Next Up Music Awards), has been established in Australia to celebrate emerging talent in schools. Founded by music industry executive Milly Petriella, the initiative seeks to address declining music education access and bolster the future creative workforce. The program recognizes school-aged recording artists, producers, and songwriters, offering them a national stage through awards, live performances, and mentorship. Homegrown stars Sia and Troye Sivan are lending their support as patrons.
The NUMAs will also spotlight educators with a music teacher of the year award presented by Music Australia. Furthermore, a paid Youth Intern Program will provide hands-on experience for young creators. Milly Petriella, recently recognized with an Order of Australia Medal, has a long history of supporting the music industry, including founding the Vanda and Young Global Songwriting Competition. Nominations and intern applications open in June 2026.
The inaugural NUMAs event is scheduled for January 28, 2027, at Carriageworks in Sydney. The initiative is backed by the federal government's Revive Live program and partners such as The Song Room and Music Australia. The program aims to create a real-world space for creativity and connection for young people.
