The National Students' Film Festival (NSFF) 2026 recently concluded its two-day run on March 1 at the University of Mumbai's Kalina campus. The festival, which began on February 28, presented 30 shortlisted student films from various languages and genres.
Jointly organized by Rashtriya Kala Manch, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, and Vidyarthi Nidhi Trust, NSFF 2026 served as a vital platform for young filmmakers to interact with industry experts. Key figures present at the inauguration included director Ravi Udyawar and ABVP national secretary Payal Kinake.
Mentorship sessions were led by accomplished professionals such as writer Nidhi Singh Dharma, screenwriter Amarnath Jha, and National Award-winning directors Neeraj Kumar Mishra and Vandita Chakradev. These experts guided students on storytelling, emerging media landscapes, and the ethical responsibilities of filmmakers in the current era.
Four intensive masterclasses formed the academic backbone of the festival. Topics covered included screenplay design, technological advancements in filmmaking, cinematography, editing, sound design, and ethical considerations, with sessions led by figures like Abhijeet Deshpande and V. N. Aditya.
A notable panel discussion explored the intersection of "AI and the Future of Indian Cinema," featuring insights from filmmaker Pooja Kadam and producer Avinash Tripathi. They deliberated on AI's role in creative processes and potential impacts on originality.
The festival culminated in an awards ceremony where "Panpankh" received the Best Film award. Other accolades included Special Jury Awards for "Songti" and "Seize," along with awards for Best Music, Editing, Young Director, and Promising Voice.
The NSFF 2026 highlighted a growing confidence in student cinema, characterized by social awareness, technical proficiency, and creative daring. The event concluded with a sense of anticipation for the new generation of storytellers poised to shape Indian cinema's future.
