Norwich Theatre Playhouse, a beloved 300-seat fringe venue established in 1995, is embarking on a significant renovation project. The primary goal is to future-proof the historic building for the next 30 years. Plans submitted to Norwich City Council detail improvements across the entire venue, focusing on enhanced accessibility and modernization.
Key enhancements include the installation of a passenger lift to access all floors and the implementation of more energy-efficient systems. The bar area will also be updated as part of the modernization effort. These upgrades aim to address the aging infrastructure of the nearly 200-year-old building, formerly a maltings.
Originally conceived in 2019, the redevelopment was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The current project seeks to retain the Playhouse's cherished character while ensuring it operates more sustainably. If the plans receive approval, construction could commence in 2028. The theatre hopes to continue hosting performances even as renovation work progresses.
