An exhibition featuring the works of North East-based photographers Tish Murtha and Kuba Ryniewicz is set to open next week. The collection captures five decades of everyday life across the region.
Tish Murtha, originally from South Shields, documented working-class communities in Newcastle's West End from the late 1970s. Her daughter, Ella, has been instrumental in bringing her mother's work to a wider audience, especially since Murtha's passing in 2013 at age 56.
Kuba Ryniewicz, who has resided in Newcastle since 2004, was commissioned by the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art to create new works. His photography offers a counterpoint to Murtha's documentary style, exploring themes of joy and resilience.
Ryniewicz noted a shared honesty and warmth in their approaches, despite their different experiences. He arrived in Newcastle to study English and later pursued photography at Northumbria University. His new body of work complements Murtha's archive, creating a dialogue between two powerful photographic voices.
The exhibition, titled Close to Home, opens at Baltic on July 4 and will continue until April of the following year. It aims to showcase the friendship and connection built through photography, celebrating the spirit of the North East.
