In March 2025, the drama film 'Outerlands' premiered at the SXSW festival. The movie, which is now available on Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home, stars non-binary actor Asia Kate Dillon in the lead role of Cass, a 30-something individual who hustles various jobs to make rent on their tiny San Francisco apartment.
When Cass agrees to babysit their work crush Kalli's 11-year-old daughter Ari, memories of Cass' own troubled childhood begin to resurface, sending them on a healing journey with Ari. The film explores how Cass navigates their identity and trauma, with Dillon praising director Oxman for giving them the opportunity to play a "lead character who is in almost every frame of the film, who is a non-binary trans character, but that's not what the movie is about."
Dillon expressed pride that 'Outerlands' now sits in the "historical canon of queer films", stating that if a film like this had been available when they were younger, "it would have changed my life." The film also stars Lea DeLaria and Daniel K. Isaac.
