Nolan's Odyssey Drives 5000% Rise in Greek Searches

Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" has become a cultural phenomenon, leading to a significant increase in interest in learning Greek. Searches for "learn Greek" in the UK reportedly rose by 5,000 percent in the last two weeks leading up to its release.

The film has achieved remarkable box office success, earning over $640 million worldwide since its debut. This success is also attributed to the enduring appeal of Homer's nearly 3,000-year-old epic poem.

Beyond film interest, sales of published copies of "The Odyssey" have seen a 70 percent rise compared to last year. This indicates a broader resurgence in engagement with the classical text.

However, the film also sparked debate among scholars regarding its adaptation choices. Criticisms focused on costume design and the use of modern English, with some male characters wearing trousers instead of traditional skirts.

Nolan explained his decision to alter the poem's "grim and misogynistic" original ending, aiming to address themes of warfare and masculinity while excluding certain problematic material.

"The Odyssey" is now one of Nolan's best-reviewed films and is on track to become his most profitable, potentially surpassing "The Dark Knight Rises."
