Nolan Brushes Off Backlash Over Film's Diverse Cast
10 Jul
Summary
- Director Christopher Nolan dismisses online criticism as irrelevant.
- Backlash targeted casting choices, including Lupita Nyong'o and Elliot Page.
- Nolan compares current criticism to that faced during Batman Begins reboot.

Christopher Nolan is taking a firm stance against the online backlash surrounding the casting and design choices for his adaptation of Homer's 'The Odyssey.' The director dismissed the criticism, stating that conversations happening before a film's release are "always irrelevant" because those involved do not yet know the actual content of the movie.
This approach mirrors the challenges Nolan faced when he helmed the 'Batman Begins' reboot in 2003. He learned then that one cannot worry about existing interpretations of beloved characters. Instead, the focus must be on honoring the original text through the strongest personal interpretation possible.
Elon Musk and Matt Walsh were among the critics, with Musk voicing that Nolan had "lost his integrity" over Lupita Nyong'o's casting as Helen of Troy. Walsh also criticized Nyong'o's role and called Nolan a "coward." Musk also amplified posts mocking Elliot Page, who is reportedly playing Sinon, Odysseus's cousin, not Achilles as rumored.
