Noah Kahan's Music No Trump Endorsement

Folk singer Noah Kahan has publicly denounced the Trump administration's unauthorized use of his song "American Cars." The White House had incorporated the track into a social media video marking President Trump's visit to a General Motors facility in Michigan. Kahan was quick to reject any association, stating he would "never approve" of his music supporting the administration. His guitarist and co-writer, Noah Levine, also voiced strong opposition. The White House deputy communications director responded by referencing Kahan's "northern attitude."

Following this exchange, "American Cars" was removed from the Trump administration's Instagram post, though it reportedly remained on TikTok. This incident echoes similar controversies, notably Katy Perry's strong objection to her song "Firework" being used in a White House video depicting military strikes. Perry emphasized her song's message of hope and healing was violated by its use to "celebrate warfare."

Kahan and Perry are among numerous artists, including Olivia Rodrigo, Queen, Rihanna, and R.E.M., who have previously called on the Trump administration to cease using their music at events and on social media without permission. These artists argue their music's intent is often undermined when co-opted for political messaging.
