Cohen Media Group has acquired the U.S. distribution rights for "Lady," the debut feature film by Nigerian-born writer-director Olive Nwosu. This acquisition follows the film's successful world premiere in the World Dramatic Cinema Competition at this year's Sundance Film Festival, where it earned a Special Jury Award for best ensemble cast. The film also had its European premiere at the Berlinale.
"Lady" is set in Lagos and tells the story of a determined young woman working as one of the city's few female cab drivers. She dreams of a better life away from the city's chaos. Her life takes an unexpected turn when a childhood friend, now a sex worker, re-enters her life, drawing her into the vibrant and sometimes tumultuous Lagos nightlife.
The film, a UK and Nigerian production, developed with Film4 and financed by entities including the BFI and Film4, features a soundtrack rich with contemporary African jazz and dance music, including artists from Nigeria and the diaspora. Director Olive Nwosu conducted extensive research with Nigerian sex workers to ensure an authentic and respectful portrayal.
