Former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has revealed her casting wish for a biopic, naming Dame Helen Mirren as her ideal choice to play her. Sturgeon, who stepped down in February 2023 at the age of 55, expressed her admiration for the 80-year-old Oscar-winning actress, suggesting Mirren could "pull off the accent." Mirren has an impressive filmography, having portrayed esteemed historical figures such as Queen Elizabeth I and II, and Catherine the Great.
The former SNP leader shared her preference in remarks made to Scottish Field magazine before an upcoming appearance at Pitlochry Festival Theatre's Winter Words Festival. Her tenure as First Minister was marked by significant events, including the Covid-19 pandemic and internal political turbulence within the SNP, providing ample dramatic material for a film.
As of February 2026, Helen Mirren has not publicly responded to Sturgeon's endorsement. In 2014, Mirren also remained private about her political views but expressed a fondness for haggis, humorously noting she would travel to enjoy it.
