The Massillon Museum is set to present "Nick Lee: Eternal Flames," an exhibition running from July 18 to August 30 in its Studio M space. This collection features the work of artist Nick Lee, who identifies as Japanese American. Lee's artistic mission is to enhance the representation of minority groups within American portraiture and Western art.
Through his art, Lee incorporates symbolic Japanese elements, seeking to forge a connection with a cultural heritage he did not experience in his youth. A free public reception celebrating the artist is planned for August 1, coinciding with the opening of another exhibit, "Paul's Browns." Lee's academic background includes a BFA from Kent State University, and he is currently pursuing an MFA at the University of Iowa. He has been recognized with significant awards, including the 2023 Distinguished Citizen for Art Education by the Ohio Art Education Association and the 2024 Arts Alive Emerging Artist award by Summit Artspace.
Visitors to Massillon Museum can also explore several other concurrent exhibitions. These include "Driving Forces: The Lincoln Highway Journey," "Saving Face: Salvaged Negatives of Henry Clay Fleming," and "Play Like a Girl: Flag Football in the City of Champions" (concluding July 12). Additional displays feature "Introducing Massillon Community Arts Council: Creativity within Community," the Paul Brown/Massillon Tiger Football History Timeline, "Small but Mighty: Big Personalities in Local Circus History," the Immel Circus diorama, and "Innovators of Massillon," alongside galleries dedicated to local history and fine arts.
The museum's operations are supported by ArtsBuild funding from ArtsinStark, made possible by the Stark County community's contributions to the annual Campaign for the Arts. Massillon Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m. Starting July 9, Thursday hours will be extended to 8 p.m. Admission is free, and the museum is located at 121 Lincoln Way E in downtown Massillon.
