NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) is bolstering its commitment to emerging storytellers through an expanded NewNarratives initiative. The program now offers a total of $35,000 in grant funding and includes a new fellowship component supported by Absurd, an AI storytelling tool company.
Launched in 2021, NewNarratives has previously supported over 1,175 applications from 89 countries, investing nearly $300,000. This year's installment features six grants across three categories. Four core grants of $5,000 each are funded by the Rhulen Family Foundation, available for narrative, documentary, animation, experimental, or episodic projects.
The environmental storytelling grant, in its second year, awards $5,000 to a short film in post-production focusing on sustainability or climate. A new $10,000 grant, supported by Absurd, is dedicated to AI storytelling, including a three-month fellowship for the recipient to explore Absurd's AI tools.
NFMLA emphasizes that independent filmmaking often lacks substantial financial backing. The NewNarratives program aims to bridge this gap by supporting filmmakers at the crucial early stages of their creative journeys, investing in the future voices of the industry. Applications are currently open to NFMLA members.
