The Apple TV+ period drama "The Buccaneers," inspired by Edith Wharton's unfinished novel, is officially in production for its third season. A familiar face from "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" and "The Vampire Diaries" has been cast as Frank, a charming stranger who arrives to disrupt the world of Nan and Mrs. St. George. This casting news follows recent set photos circulating online, confirming production is underway.
Season 3's storyline teases a united front for the "Buccaneers" as they "fight back together." The logline hints at a shift from navigating first loves to seeking lasting ones, with a new enigmatic Duke at the helm and Tintagel facing an uncertain future. This new "bad-boy Duke" is poised to create more upheaval than the American girls did.
The identity of the new "bad boy Duke" remains a mystery. However, Season 2 ended with the introduction of Kit, Theo's long-lost half-brother, who could potentially inherit the Duke of Tintagel title after Theo's abdication. Summoned by the Dowager Duchess, Kit's arrival was dramatic but his casting was unrevealed.
"The Buccaneers" was renewed for a third season in October, two months after its second season finale. The series is noted for its blend of Gilded Age American and English settings with contemporary music. Season 1 exclusively featured songs by female artists, while Season 2 explored themes of love, heartbreak, motherhood, and legal battles.
Season 2 saw Theo renounce his title to marry Lizzy after rekindling their romance while Nan was away. This complicated situation is further heightened by Nan's pregnancy with Theo's child, a potential heir to the Tintagel title and property. The series also stars Alisha Boe, Josie Totah, Mia Threapleton, and the late Josh Dylan.
Leighton Meester, who joined in Season 2 as Nan's biological mother Aunt Nell, will return. Nan's status as illegitimate was a significant plot point in Season 1, impacting her romantic choices between Guy Thwarte and marrying Theo. Season 2 featured a supporting cast including Grace Ambrose, Maria Almeida, Amelia Bullmore, Fenella Woolgar, Greg Wise, and Jacob Ifan.
