This Valentine's Day weekend, four wide releases are vying for audience attention, aiming to revitalize theater attendance. "Wuthering Heights," a new adaptation from Warner Bros., is projected to be the weekend's top performer, with independent trackers anticipating a $45-50 million four-day opening. The film, starring Margot Robbie and directed by Emerald Fennell, reportedly received an $80 million offer for a theatrical release.
Sony Pictures Animation's "Goat" is set to draw in family audiences, with projections for a $35-38 million four-day opening. This original animated film arrives as studios increasingly look to create new intellectual property for families, a segment that has become more discerning since the pandemic.
Additionally, Amazon MGM is releasing the crime thriller "Crime 101," starring Chris Hemsworth and Halle Berry, with an estimated $17 million four-day opening. Briarcliff Entertainment's sci-fi satire "Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die," featuring Sam Rockwell, is projected to earn $5 million over the four-day period.
Hollywood is also focusing on films catering to specific demographics, particularly women, with "The Housemaid" having recently achieved significant success. This trend is expected to continue with upcoming releases, aiming to reduce reliance on broad appeal films and bolster monthly box office totals.
