Gollum's Untold Story: New LOTR Film Announced

Warner Bros. has secured rights for new films based on J.R.R. Tolkien's work, with a focus on Gollum. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens are collaborating on "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum." This new venture will explore the compelling backstory of Gollum/Sméagol, a character Jackson feels resonates deeply due to his reflection of human nature.

The film's narrative will be set between "The Hobbit" and "The Fellowship of the Ring." It follows Aragorn's mission to apprehend Gollum before he can reveal the Ring's location to Sauron. Andy Serkis, who famously portrayed Gollum through motion capture, will not only reprise his role but also step behind the camera as director. He expressed immense honor and excitement for the opportunity.

Walsh and Boyens are co-writing the screenplay with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. The film promises to leverage advancements in motion capture technology, allowing for more nuanced performances than seen in the original trilogy. While details about other returning cast members are sparse, there is hope for familiar faces from Middle-earth to appear.

Additionally, a separate project tentatively titled "The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past" is being developed by Stephen Colbert, Peter McGee, and Philippa Boyens. This film will adapt "Fogs on the Barrow-downs" from "The Fellowship of the Ring," introducing characters like Tom Bombadil.
