- The Cage is a high-energy crime story set in a Liverpool casino.
- Sheridan Smith praised for her Scouse accent and friendly demeanor during filming.

The new five-part drama, 'The Cage,' is set to premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Writer Tony Schumacher drew inspiration from his late brother's struggles with alcoholism to explore addiction in his latest work. The series, which centers on two casino workers caught in a high-stakes robbery, is set against the backdrop of a Liverpool casino.
Schumacher, who also penned the hit drama 'The Responder,' explained that while he wanted to write about addiction, he avoided alcoholism due to its personal proximity. "Gambling is such a major, major issue," he stated, finding it a compelling starting point for the narrative. He lauded the city of Liverpool for embracing star Sheridan Smith, who plays Leanne.
Smith, who previously portrayed Cilla Black in a Liverpool-based drama, expressed her affection for the city, calling its residents "so friendly." The cast and crew's positive interactions with local businesses, such as Paper Cup Coffee cafe, were highlighted. Filming locations also extended to Bolton and Tockholes in Lancashire, with local establishments like The Royal Arms pub hosting the production team.
'The Cage' stars Sheridan Smith and Michael Socha, whose on-screen chemistry was described as magical. Schumacher praised Socha's performance as Matty, noting he "totally nailed it" from the first day of shooting. The drama promises a blend of dark humor and intense storytelling.
