Director Bill Condon is set to helm 'The Road Home,' a film originating from a screenplay by Michael Bronner, inspired by a story co-written with Zakes Mda. The narrative centers on South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela and vocalist Miriam Makeba during the anti-apartheid era.
The movie will explore the controversy surrounding Paul Simon's 'Graceland' album, which led to accusations of violating a cultural boycott. Masekela, exiled from South Africa, finds himself torn between his mentor's stance and his belief in music's power.
He ultimately collaborates with Makeba to form the Graceland band, aiming to broadcast South Africa's voice globally. The film will feature music from Masekela, Makeba, and Simon. Studiocanal is financing the project and will manage distribution across several key international markets.
International sales will be launched at the Cannes Film Festival by Palisades Park Pictures. The production boasts an experienced team, including producers Laura Bickford and Anant Singh, with veteran music producer Hilton Rosenthal overseeing new recordings for the soundtrack.
