Filmmaker Jasmeet K. Reen, acclaimed for her directorial debut with the 2022 film 'Darlings,' has been appointed as the new director. She takes over from Nupur Asthana, who helmed the first season and has stepped aside due to prior commitments, including work on another Netflix series.
Pre-production for 'The Royals' Season 2 is currently in progress, with filming anticipated to commence in July 2026. This directorial change follows reports that Bhumi S. Pednekar, who starred as the female lead, will not be featured in the next season, suggesting a comprehensive creative revamp.
Reen is expected to complete her work on 'The Royals' Season 2 before commencing a period drama based on the life of Madhubala. The Madhubala biopic, backed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is slated to feature Sara Arjun in the titular role.
