Netflix & Hulu Exit Consoles: Your TV Apps Gone!
5 Feb
Summary
- Netflix app support for PS3 ended on March 2nd, 2026.
- Hulu is discontinuing its app on the original Nintendo Switch.
- Console streaming app usage has significantly declined since 2018.

Netflix has discontinued its application for the PlayStation 3, with support officially ending on March 2nd, 2026. This move signifies the removal of a platform that was once central to Netflix's living room strategy. Concurrently, Hulu is ceasing support for its application on the original Nintendo Switch console.
These decisions come as the prevalence of game consoles as primary streaming devices has significantly waned. In early 2018, 21 percent of U.S. households utilized a game console for streaming; by the end of 2025, this figure had fallen to just 7 percent. This decline is contrasted by an increase in smart TV streaming, which rose from 39 percent to 61 percent in the same period.
The PS3 was instrumental for Netflix's app development, utilizing HTML5 for on-the-fly updates and A/B testing, often introducing features like casting before other platforms. However, as streaming services evolve with features like cloud-streamed games and interactive content, support for older hardware becomes less feasible.
