Netflix Prioritizes Engagement Quality Over Hours
17 Jul
Summary
- Netflix emphasizes 'quality' engagement over total viewing hours.
- Growth of 2% in viewing hours represents 1.5 billion extra hours viewed.
- Company considers a free tier but prioritizes avoiding paid tier cannibalization.

Netflix Co-CEOs Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos are reorienting the company's strategy to prioritize the "quality" of member engagement over the total number of hours viewed. This approach comes as the platform reported a modest 2% increase in viewing hours, amounting to 1.5 billion additional hours in the first half of 2026, a new but slim record. Peters defended this incremental growth, stating that the relationship between hours and revenue is not linear.
The company is exploring diverse content avenues, including live programming and podcasts, to enhance engagement and revenue streams. Live content, though only 1% of viewing hours, generates significant ad revenue and subscriber interest. While Netflix has acquired content for potential future use, Co-CEO Ted Sarandos downplayed reports of significant viewership drops between seasons of popular shows, asserting that overall retention has slightly improved.
Regarding future offerings, Netflix is considering the introduction of free ad-supported television (FAST) channels or a free tier. Peters acknowledged reports of testing free trials for non-returning users in some international markets. However, he stressed the need for careful consideration to avoid cannibalizing existing paid subscriptions, indicating no immediate plans for a free offering but keeping the possibility open for strategic markets.
