Netflix Denies Repeating Plot in Dialogue
18 Mar
Summary
- Netflix execs deny asking filmmakers to repeat plot in dialogue.
- Comments followed Affleck and Damon's 'Joe Rogan Experience' remarks.
- Streamer affirms focus on sophisticated audiences and great movies.

Netflix executives have directly addressed and denied recent suggestions that the streaming service instructs filmmakers to repeat plot points within dialogue. During a press event, Netflix film chief Dan Lin clarified that "there is no such principle," countering comments previously made by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon on 'The Joe Rogan Experience' to promote their new film, 'The Rip.'
Lin stated that the company found the notion amusing, especially after a related gag at the Oscars. He emphasized Netflix's commitment to producing great movies and treating audiences as sophisticated. Scripted series head Jinny Howe further supported this, joking that content chief Bela Bajaria acts as "exposition police" and is firmly against unnecessary explanations, trusting viewers' attention and intelligence.
Bajaria expressed that the idea of Netflix issuing such a note is "offensive to creators and filmmakers." Separately, Lin discussed Netflix's evolving strategy regarding theatrical releases following the end of their deal with Warner Bros., stating the company remains "streaming first" but is exploring special theatrical events. Bajaria clarified that previous discussions of 45-day theatrical windows pertained to Warner Bros. output, not Netflix's own films.
