Netflix has secured global distribution rights, excluding France, for the animated romance "In Waves." This acquisition marks a significant deal out of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where the film opened Critics Week to acclaim. Directed by Phuong Mai Nguyen, the movie is an adaptation of AJ Dungo's 2019 graphic memoir and features a voice cast including Oscar-nominee Stephanie Hsu and BAFTA winner Will Sharpe.
The film centers on AJ, a shy teenager, and Kristen, a surfer, whose love story unfolds against the backdrop of a sudden illness. Their resilience is tested as they navigate adversity, relying on their relationship and connection to the ocean. "In Waves" was a highly competitive project, with Netflix winning the rights in a bidding war. The deal is rumored to be in the mid-seven figures.
