Netflix revealed a significant surge in anime viewership, projecting 1.5 billion views by 2025, up from 1 billion in 2023. Over 150 million households across 190-plus countries now engage with anime in 34 languages, with more than half of Netflix members watching the genre. The platform prioritizes a "creative first, local first" strategy, acting as creative partners with studios like Colorido and Kyoto Animation to appeal to Japanese audiences while achieving global reach.
Investment in dubbing and localization is also increasing, as 80% of global viewers prefer watching anime in their local language. The Annecy panel showcased highly anticipated titles, including initial glimpses of "The One Piece" adaptation by Wit Studio and the anime-adjacent series "Blue Eye Samurai" returning for its second season.
New anime series "Fool Night," a dark dystopian tale from Sunrise and Shaft, was unveiled with a teaser trailer. Additionally, a new trailer for the animated feature film "The Ribbon Hero" offered a glimpse into its visually inspired storytelling. Fans also saw electrifying new footage from "Cyberpunk Edgerunners" Season 2, continuing the acclaimed sci-fi series with its original creative team.
The streaming service also highlighted "anime-adjacent" works like "Blue Eye Samurai," with its second season following Mizu's journey to London, and "Bass X Machina," a genre-bending series inspired by the Black sheriff Bass Reeves. Netflix's slate demonstrates anime's pervasive influence, extending beyond traditional anime to inspire Western productions.
