Netflix has secured the rights to "Somewhere Out There," an emotional sci-fi spec script penned by Max Taxe. The acquisition followed a competitive bidding process, highlighting significant industry interest in the project. Shawn Levy, the filmmaker behind "Deadpool & Wolverine" and the Netflix hit "The Adam Project," is attached to direct.
The story focuses on a father who, devastated by the loss of his wife, broadcasts a message into the cosmos. Unexpectedly, an entity from outer space begins to communicate back, setting the stage for a compelling narrative.
Levy, who is producing through his 21 Laps banner with Dan Levine, is known for collaborating with major stars. Sources indicate that several prominent actors are already considering the role of the grieving father. Becca Edelman will oversee the project for 21 Laps.
Levy recently completed production on "Starfighter," starring Ryan Gosling, which is slated for a May 28, 2027 theatrical release. His previous film, "Deadpool & Wolverine," achieved historic success, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie. Max Taxe also has "Ripple" in development with 21 Laps and previously wrote the 2022 HBO Max film "Moonshot."
