Netflix has secured the global distribution rights for 'Soy Frankelda' (I Am Frankelda), a Spanish-language stop-motion animated feature. The film is slated for a worldwide release in 2026 and represents a pioneering achievement as Mexico's first-ever feature-length stop-motion production.
Developed by the Ambriz brothers at their Mexico City studio, Cinema Fantasma, the story is set in 19th-century Mexico. It centers on Frankelda, a gifted writer whose dark tales are suppressed. When thrust into her subconscious, her own creations manifest.
Guided by Herneval, a prince trapped between dreams and nightmares, Frankelda must restore balance between fiction and reality. The film also navigates her growing bond with Herneval and confronts the sinister writer Procustes, who schemes to seize control.
Guillermo del Toro, who has previously collaborated with Netflix on stop-motion initiatives, praised 'Frankelda' as a landmark production. He highlighted its "vision, tenacity and love for the craft." The film has also earned a nomination for best independent feature film at the 53rd Annie Awards.
