Jamestown Becomes Comedy's Historic Epicenter

Jamestown, New York, has become a significant center for comedy, spearheaded by the National Comedy Center. Executive Director Journey Gunderson emphasizes the institution's vital mission: to study and preserve the art form of comedy. The city, hometown of Lucille Ball, annually hosts the Lucille Ball Comedy Festival, which is set to feature Jerry Seinfeld, Bert Kreischer, and Seth Meyers from August 7-9.

For 15 years, Gunderson has led the nonprofit center, which expanded in 2018 to include the National Comedy Center. This facility now preserves the archives of comedy legends, including George Carlin, Carl Reiner, and Mel Brooks. Comedians performing at the festival increasingly recognize the center's unique value, making time to tour its galleries. Jon Stewart, after touring the museum, noted that no one had previously established such an institution to document comedy's history.

The festival attracts national visitors and has propelled the center to greater prominence. Mel Brooks has committed his extensive personal archives, containing over 150,000 documents and 5,000 photographs, to the center. This collection offers insights into his comedic development and creative process, showcasing his fearless satire and unique blend of humor. Gunderson stresses the urgency of this preservation work to ensure comedy history is accessible for future learning and appreciation.
