The Sansevero Chapel Museum in Naples is offering a rare tactile experience for visually impaired visitors. Approximately 80 blind and partially sighted individuals are invited to touch celebrated marble sculptures, including Giuseppe Sanmartino's renowned Veiled Christ. This initiative, titled 'La meraviglia a portata di mano - Wonder within reach,' is scheduled for March 17 and is a collaboration with the Italian Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired of Naples.
During this event, protective barriers will be temporarily removed, allowing participants, equipped with latex gloves, to explore the textures and forms of the artworks. Guides, who are also visually impaired, will lead the tours, focusing on an inclusive museum experience. The tactile route extends to other sculptures like La Pudicizia and Il Disinganno, enabling a deeper, sensory appreciation of these masterpieces. This aligns with the museum's broader goal of creating an accessible cultural space.
Museum president Maria Alessandra Masucci highlighted that this program is part of a larger effort to ensure inclusivity. Giuseppe Ambrosino of the Italian Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired stated that enjoying beauty should be a universal right, not limited by sight. He believes such accessibility projects transform museums into places of genuine inclusion, affirming that art belongs to everyone and allowing beauty to be felt directly by the heart.
