Dasara Elephants Weigh In: Srikanta Tops the Scales!
30 Aug
Summary
- Elephants underwent weight assessment for custom diet plans.
- Srikanta, 57, is the heaviest at 5,790 kg; Kaveri is lightest at 3,075 kg.
- Jumbos to start rehearsals soon after a special nutritional diet.

The first group of nine elephants has arrived at Mysuru Palace for the upcoming Dasara festivities and has completed their initial weight assessments. This vital step ensures the forest department can create tailored nutritional plans for each elephant, consisting of rice balls with jaggery, vegetables, coconuts, sugarcane, and pulses.
Srikanta, a 57-year-old from Mathigodu Elephant Camp, registered the highest weight at 5,790 kg. In contrast, 46-year-old Kaveri from Dubare Elephant Camp was the lightest, weighing 3,075 kg. These elephants are in good health, and their diets will be adjusted based on their individual weight and height.
Following this assessment, the jumbos will commence daily training sessions, twice a day, to acclimate to the procession route, crowds, and the sounds of the festival. Traditionally, these elephants are brought to Mysuru about 45 to 50 days before Dasara to allow sufficient time for preparation and acclimatization.
