Yakshagana artiste Arshiya Khan, known as Thanu Vitla, will embody the divine role of Sri Devi in the upcoming Sri Devi Mahatme Yakshagana performance. This significant event is scheduled for October 20 at Kadri Sri Manjunatha Temple in Mangaluru. Khan, a Muslim by faith, has been immersed in the traditional coastal art form since the age of nine, demonstrating remarkable dedication.
Her journey in Yakshagana, an art form deeply intertwined with Hindu religious traditions, has been bolstered by the steadfast support of her family. To prepare for her portrayal of the deity, Arshiya is strictly observing a 'vratha' and maintaining a pure vegetarian diet, showcasing her profound respect and commitment.
The 'Devi Mahatme' Yakshagana will be staged by a collective of artists as part of the Dasara celebrations organized by Kadali Kala Kendra. Ramesh Bhat Kadri, Arshiya's guru, highlighted that Kadali Kala Kendra has organized a 10-day Yakshagana festival, 'Kadali Dashaha', annually for 13 years. The 14th edition of this festival will run from October 11 to October 20 at Kadri Temple Rajangana, culminating with the 'Sampoorna Sri Devi Mahatme' performance on the final day.
Arshiya, a graduate working in a media house, has previously undertaken various roles in Yakshagana, including villainous characters and other divine figures over the past 12 years. She expressed gratitude to her guru, Ramesh Bhat Kadri, for imparting comprehensive knowledge of the art form, and her parents, Abdul Khadar and Mumtaz, for their encouragement.
