The film centers on Doug Leibowitz, portrayed by Will Brill, a disillusioned playwright turned middle school theater teacher. His life takes a turn when his ex-girlfriend begins dating the school's principal, Brady, played by Rob Lowe. Driven by ambition and a desire for revenge, Doug devises a plan to sabotage the principal's reputation.
Doug's scheme involves secretly directing his middle school students in a highly inappropriate play, aiming to jeopardize the principal's coveted Blue Ribbon award. The cast also includes Gillian Jacobs.
"The Musical" premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January. Bonilla, an alum of the Sundance Institute, previously collaborated with Alexander Heller on a short film of the same name that garnered audience awards. The film is produced by Rob Lowe, Greg Lauritano, Alexander Heller, and others.
