Mumtaz: Career Peak vs. Marriage Choice

Veteran actor Mumtaz, who began her film journey in 1952 as a child artist, navigated early B-grade roles before achieving widespread recognition. Her career trajectory shifted significantly after starring opposite Dilip Kumar in the 1967 hit 'Ram Aur Shyam,' opening doors to more prominent opportunities and successful pairings, notably with Rajesh Khanna.

In 1968, Mumtaz reportedly received a marriage proposal from Shammi Kapoor, who stipulated she quit acting post-marriage. Mumtaz declined, choosing to focus on her career, which was then ascending. This decision marked a pivotal moment where career ambitions took precedence.

However, in 1974, Mumtaz made a different choice, retiring from films at the peak of her career to marry Gujarati businessman Mayur Madhvani. Their interfaith union, while noted, was supported by her family, who emphasized settling down over her professional earnings.

Reflecting on her marriage, Mumtaz shared that her family, of Iranian origin, held an orthodox view where marriage for women was a natural progression. Her grandmother, mother, and aunt had approved the proposal, advising her to quit acting and get married.

She also addressed her close, platonic relationship with Feroz Khan, clarifying it was based on friendship and shared Iranian roots, not romance. Her daughter is now married into Feroz Khan's family, continuing a familial connection.
