Mumbai Monsoons Threaten Ganeshotsav Preparations
13 Sep
Summary
- Heavy rains are impacting Ganeshotsav preparations across Mumbai.
- Mandals are reinforcing pandals and taking safety measures.
- Concerns exist about devotee turnout due to continuous rainfall.
Heavy monsoon rains have significantly disrupted Ganeshotsav preparations across Mumbai, casting a shadow over the upcoming festival. Families arriving to collect idols on Sunday were met with downpours, and numerous public mandals were forced to fortify their pandals against the persistent weather.
Preparations at prominent mandals like Chinchpokli Cha Chintamani and Navi Mumbaicha Raja have experienced delays or complete stalls. Organizers reported challenges such as pandal leakages, waterlogged areas, damaged paintwork, and difficulties with electrical installations. Efforts are underway to reinforce structures and manage queues to ensure devotee safety.
Despite the continuous rainfall since Saturday night, some mandals like Mumbadevi Cha Ganraj are pressing on with preparations, employing additional tarpaulins and protective coverings. Wooden platforms are being constructed in areas prone to waterlogging to facilitate devotee access. The Brihanmumbai Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanvay Samiti has issued advisories for mandals to prioritize the safety of devotees, idols, and electrical setups.
Volunteers from various mandals worked through the night to tackle both the looming deadlines and the challenging weather conditions. A key concern remains that the inclement weather might discourage devotees from venturing out during the Ganeshotsav period, potentially affecting overall attendance and the festive atmosphere.
