Mubi has secured distribution rights for Lukas Dhont's new film, "Coward," which will compete for the Palme d'Or at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. This acquisition covers the U.K., Ireland, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand.
The deal was announced shortly after Mubi acquired rights to Na Hong-Jin's Korean thriller "Hope." Dhont's previous film, "Close," was nominated for an Oscar for best international feature.
"Coward" is set during World War I and centers on Pierre, a new soldier at the front eager to prove himself. He encounters Francis, who organizes a theatre show to uplift his comrades. Amidst ongoing violence, both men seek temporary escapes from the war's brutality.
The film marks a reunion for Dhont with many collaborators from his previous features, including co-writer Angelo Tijssens, composer Valentin Hadjadj, and editor Alain Dessauvage. Production involved numerous European entities and received significant support from various film funds, including those in Flanders and the Netherlands.
