Sri Shanmukhananda Fine Arts & Sangeetha Sabha recently celebrated the 100th anniversary of the first recording by the iconic Carnatic music vocalist MS Subbulakshmi. To commemorate this milestone, the Sabha presented a fellowship in her name to 50 promising young musicians hailing from various parts of the country. This fellowship is open to talents across all disciplines, including vocal, violin, flute, mridangam, tabla, and nadaswaram. Each recipient will receive a substantial cash award of Rs 1 lakh annually for three consecutive years. The Sabha has a rich history of supporting young artists, having previously awarded this fellowship to 231 musicians. The event also marked the release of a special cancellation cover by Ramchandra Jaybhaye, chief postmaster general of Maharashtra, commemorating MS Subbulakshmi's very first recording in 1926. This recording, made by Twin Record company when she was just 10 years old, is a significant part of her legacy, with Shanmukhananda Sabha proudly possessing the original 1926 disc, which was played during the celebrations. Musician Nanditha Ravi was also honored with the Sangeetha Pracharya award during the event.
