An original Mr Blobby costume, a relic from the 1990s BBC show Noel's House Party, has sold for £8,500 at auction. The costume, one of three originals, was sold by Auctioneum Ltd in Bristol. Auctioneer Andy Stowe noted that the high price reflects the continued popularity of the Nineties icon.
The winning bid came after 26 offers, with interest from international buyers. The costume was expected to sell for up to £5,000, making the final price a significant achievement. A related item, a figure of Baby Blobby, also sold successfully for £2,100.
This particular Mr Blobby outfit was used for external filming and stunts, distinct from those used solely within TV studios. It also appeared on Mr Blobby home video releases. The enduring love for nostalgia was cited as a key factor in the strong bidding.
Mr Blobby, known for his chaotic antics and distinctive appearance, was a major cultural phenomenon. His popularity extended to a theme park, Blobbyland, and even a number one Christmas single in 1993. The costume was previously owned by Mickey Wills, a former head of entertainment at Blobbyland.
