Dark Star Pictures has acquired the North American rights to the horror film Motherwitch, which is set to screen at the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia. The film's international sales were handled by B-Rated International Sales.
Motherwitch unfolds in 1882 Cyprus, centering on Eleni, a painter ostracized by her village. Following the tragic death of her three children in an accident, Eleni resorts to ancient rituals to bring them back. However, her efforts result in the summoning of dangerous mythical creatures known as Kalikantzari.
This is the third feature film by U.S.-based Greek-Cypriot director and cinematographer Minos Papas. Produced by Caretta Films and co-produced with the Deputy Ministry of Culture of Cyprus, the film was shot on location in Cyprus. It has previously premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and has been featured in over 20 festivals worldwide.
The film has also secured distribution deals in Poland with Velvet Spoon and for France and Spain with Shadowz. Motherwitch recently had a gala screening in Nicosia and is scheduled for a theatrical release on the island at the end of October.
