Whakaata Māori of New Zealand and Canada's APTN have launched an international co-production for the children's adventure sci-fi comedy series, "Māui & Elvis." This collaboration unites creative and broadcast talent from Māori and Métis/Cree communities.
The series centers on Māui, from Aotearoa, and Elvis, from Canada, who embark on a mission to save Māui's grandmother from an alien. Primarily set in New Zealand's South Island with scenes in Vancouver, the show incorporates local landscapes and phenomena.
"Māui & Elvis" will feature at least 30% te reo Māori dialogue, ensuring tikanga Māori (Māori cultural values) are integral. This production emphasizes shared Indigenous values like friendship, resilience, and cultural pride.
The series is scheduled for a 2027 premiere, following production commencement in November 2026. This partnership aims to foster deeper collaboration between Indigenous broadcasters worldwide, showcasing languages, cultures, and creativity for families.
