Monica Bellucci graces the Cannes Film Festival this year, starring in Léa Mysius's "The Birthday Party" (Histoires De La Nuit). This dark thriller, adapted from Laurent Mauvignier's acclaimed novel, is set to close the main competition program on Friday. The narrative unfolds in a remote marshland where a family—Thomas, Nora, and their teenage daughter Ida—has limited social contact. Bellucci plays Cristina, their only neighbor and an Italian painter.
As the family prepares a surprise birthday party for Nora, unsettling disturbances begin to plague the isolated setting. The film is the third feature from director Léa Mysius, previously recognized at Cannes for "Ava" and "The Five Devils." The movie also received an Oscar nomination for its screenplay. The cast includes Hafsia Herzi, Bastien Bouillon, Benoît Magimel, and others.
