24 Feb

- Social media content 'minimally' contributed to her death.
- Father campaigns for better online child protection.

A new documentary, "Molly vs the Machines," delves into the tragic death of 14-year-old Molly Russell, who died by suicide in 2017. Her father, Ian Russell, has since emerged as a prominent advocate for enhanced online safety measures for children. Molly had been exposed to thousands of harmful social media posts concerning self-harm and suicide on platforms like Instagram and Pinterest in the months preceding her death. At the inquest, it was concluded that this content played a significant role in her passing. During the inquest, a representative from Meta stated that the majority of posts Molly viewed were deemed 'safe' for children. Despite this, the inquest ultimately found that social media content contributed 'more than minimally' to Molly's death. The film features interviews with Molly's friends and her father, highlighting the profound loss and frustration over the lack of protective action for young people online. The documentary is set for release in UK cinemas on March 1, 2026.
