Sotheby's is preparing to present the Lewis Collection, an extraordinary assembly of 48 artworks with an estimated value surpassing £200 million. This marks the highest valuation ever for a single-owner collection at auction in Europe. Masterpieces from renowned artists such as Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon, and Pablo Picasso will be featured.
The centerpiece of the collection is Amedeo Modigliani's 1917 painting, 'Nu assis au collier.' This controversial nude, which caused a scandal at its debut exhibition, is expected to command a price in excess of £45 million. Its last auction appearance was in 1995.
Other significant works include Lucian Freud's 'Sleeping By The Lion Carpet,' estimated between £25 million and £35 million, and Edgar Degas' 'Petite Danseuse de quatorze ans,' with expectations up to £25 million. Seven Picasso works, including 'Buste de femme,' are also part of the sale.
Oliver Barker, Sotheby's European chairman, described the collection as "works of enormous power and beauty" that "sent shockwaves through the art world." The Lewis Collection will be publicly exhibited until June 23 at Sotheby's London, with the auction taking place from June 24 to 25.
