Summary
- Minions & Monsters opened in North America after a $10 million European/Asian box office start.
- Directors question box office focus, valuing audience enjoyment over massive financial returns.
- The film pays homage to early Hollywood pioneers and silent film era heroes.

Minions & Monsters has arrived in North American cinemas after a successful international debut, garnering $10 million across 10 territories in Europe and Asia last week. The film's opening follows the recent success of Disney/Pixar's "Toy Story 5," which has achieved nearly $600 million since its June 19 release.
Directors Pierre Coffin and Christopher Meledandri of Illumination have voiced reservations about the industry's intense focus on box office numbers. They argue that audience enjoyment and widespread viewership, regardless of platform, are more significant indicators of success than financial gross alone. Meledandri stressed that the focus should be on making films people love.
Set in Hollywood's Golden Age, "Minions & Monsters" introduces new characters like James, an artistic Minion aspiring to be a director, and his companions Henry and Ed. The narrative hilms the Minions' search for an evil boss, leading them to California where they inadvertently crash a film shoot.
This latest offering is a tribute to early filmmaking, featuring nods to pioneers like the Lumière brothers and Georges Méliès, as well as silent film icons such as Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton, and Charlie Chaplin. Director Coffin noted that while younger audiences may not recognize the allusions, the era's comedic potential was a key inspiration.
Regarding future installments, there are no concrete plans for another film in the "Despicable Me/Minions" franchise yet. Meledandri stated that the studio is always searching for a story that ignites significant interest. Meanwhile, Illumination is developing "Sing 3," "The Secret Life of Pets 3," and an original film titled "Not Alone."
