The 24th Boston International Film Festival is set to open on April 9-14 with the premiere of Italian director Louis Nero's Buddhist sci-fi drama "Milarepa." This English-language film, starring Harvey Keitel and F. Murray Abraham, unfolds on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia.
Set in a near-future post-apocalyptic world, "Milarepa" is inspired by the life of the 11th-century Buddhist saint of the same name. The narrative centers on a young girl who disguises herself as a boy to learn magical arts and seek revenge for her father's murder, which was orchestrated by her aunt over inheritance.
Harvey Keitel portrays Marpa, a guru who mentors the young protagonist, Mila, played by Isabelle Allen. The ensemble cast also features Angela Molina, Franco Nero, and Diana Dell'Erba. "Milarepa" is a multinational co-production involving L'Altrofilm, Black Hanger Studio, and Orwo Studio USA. International sales are being handled by Orwo Distribution.
